Tankard Engraving Tips

I had an enquiry recently from someone who was caught up in the recent volcanic ash cloud troubles in Northern Europe. This unfortunate fellow was unable to catch a flight home to the UK and was stranded in the Czech Republic. Fortunately a kind hearted friend drove them all the way home through Europe.

“We started from Eastern Czech Republic, east of Brno and then went through Prague, Nurnberg, Frankfurt, Liege,Brussels,Gent and on to Dunkirk, the guy deserves a medal!”,  stated Mrs Davey.

Mrs Davey wanted to purchase a fitting gift to thank her friend for their gallantry but needed a few ideas.

We assisted Mrs Davey by engraving a map of all the countries and cities which her “Chauffeur of the Year” had driven them through during the route home onto a pewter tankard.

To achieve this daunting task we decided to create a map with the journey shown with a dotted engraved line highlighting  the cities driven through and a chequered flag marking the “finish line” in Dunkirk where the journey ended.

I achieved this by using Google Maps and just tapped in the route travelled through Europe, used the print screen tool and pasted the image into a paint program.

I then proceeded to trace a basic line image of the map as shown below:

This image was now suitable for engraving on a diamond drag machine and the image wrapped around the tankard perfectly!

Tips For engraving logos:

  1. Make sure the image is created at 300 dpi at the size of the engraving area on the tankard.
  2. Trace using the pen tool or hairline tool to create the fine lines required for the engraving machine.

How To Ascertain the Quality Of Glass Tankards, Wine, Whiskey Glasses

All glass is made from Sand (silica/soda) which is available with varying amounts of Iron in it (iron gives a green/jade colour). Various Oxides are then added to the mix – Lead being the most well known.  This adds weight, clarity and colour to the glass.
The more expensive glasses generally contain lead crystal and determined by the manufacturing process, ie are they mass produced by machine or individually hand blown. Our Dartington Crystal wine glass is hand blown in England and made to exceptional quality.

Soda Glass – no lead content.
Crystal Glass – must have 11% Lead (or other oxides of a certain group to make 11% or more of the mix).
24% Lead Crystal – an industry standard for Lead Crystal Glassware, must have 24% Lead Oxide or more in the mix.
Full Lead Crystal – an unfortunately dying art, must have 31% Lead Oxide in the mix. Lead and the other Oxides add cost to the glass mix, but do have the qualities outlined above.
Then there is the method of manufacture:
Machine Made – can be Blown or Pressed.  This Tankard is pressed shown by a mould line opposite the handle.  This is the least expensive way of producing an item and it shows!  However,it is not possible to Blow a Tankard by Machine…
Machine Blown (the stems of the wine glasses have been Pressed – then assembled using gas jets)
Hand Made – Mouth Blown.  A team of men (usually) gather molten glass from a furnace and Blow the shape into a mould.

New Polished Glass Keepsakes For Father’s Day

I have just designed a brand new gift for Father’s Day which will hopefully be popular this year. This is a laser engraved polished glass keepsake which I have designed in Photoshop and have lasered the text onto the reverse side of the crystal and also onto the front of the glass block which gives a cool looking 3D mirage effect.

This father’s day keepsake is one of my favourite designs and it reflects the light beautifully and the engraving is very clear – when I presented it to the guys in the office everyone asked in astonishment “How did you create that?”, “wow” and “cool”!.

It is possible to engrave any verse or message on the reverse and a short message to Dad(or Mum,Brother,Sister) etc on the front.
