Laser Marking Techniques – Stainless Steel Jam Spoons!
I have had the pleasure of working with “Renshaw Napier LTD” a large brand based in Liverpool and Europe’s largest distributor of non refined sugar and food stuffs, responsible for tasty marmalades and jam preserves…yum!
The brief was to produce Jam spoons engraved with the one of Renshaw and Napiers famous brands of preserve jams “Scotts”.
Jam spoons are quite quirky, long thin with a quirky bend in the middle of the spoon which thankfully allows the spoon handle to sit flat on a surface allowing it to be engraved much easier.
We produced a fair few samples, our first sample was created using our trusty drag diamond engraving machine in rotary mode. This produced a fairly deep logo engraving onto the spoon handle which was very noticeable.
In our second attempt we engraved the spoon handle using CO2 laser engraving machine using a laser marking spray Cermark. This is a unique spray which creates a permanent black mark on stainless steel without the need to purchase a Yag Laser machine which is extremely expensive. We sprayed the jam spoon handle and placed it into our trusty CO2 laser and set it to the optimum speed of 100% power and 30% speed (Cermark recommend setting the speed to the power of the laser ie 30watt- 30 speed, 40 watt 40 speed etc.)
