As we all know weddings can be horrendously expensive and considering the average wedding costs around £15-20,000 there probably isn't going to be much spare change to spend on wedding invitations. To help you save money for the more important aspects of the wedding we have bashed our heads together and come up with some stylish ways of making these yourself.
Wedding invites are probably one of the most overlooked items when budgeting for a wedding. Expect to pay between £100 and £300 for professionally made wedding invites for around 50 guests, which is probably more than some people have budgeted for wedding gifts!
To save you money we have put together a simple design guide which anyone with a little patience can follow to make some pretty professional looking DIY wedding invitations which you can easily make yourself.
To achieve this stunning DIY wedding invitation design, you will need the following tools:
- A pair of sharp scissors
- Sticky tape
- PVA Glue or Prit-stick
- A4 Brown/Beige Card
- Parchment paper
- 1x Brown and 1 x beige ribbon
- Envelopes – C6 size – Marble, speckled or something classy.
- Paper Trimmer including wavy cutter option (£15-£20)
- Plenty of time and patience!
All of these items are available at your local craft store.
The first step when making your own invitations is to design the look of the invite. We have come up with a traditional design using two complementary colours, brown backing card with beige coloured parchment paper finished off with ribbon using the same colour scheme.
Design the body of the text using a script font such as Garamond or Arial and use a stylish font such as "Monotype Corsiva" or "English" for the name of the bride and groom. To achieve a professional look make sure you have left enough spacing between the lines of text, this will also make the invitation easier to read.
Once you are happy with the design print this off using a colour printer onto beige parchment paper and put to one side. Next cut the A4 brown piece of card into 6 equal strips to create the backing which the parchment will be placed on, these will fit comfortably into C6 size envelopes. Next trim the printed invitations using a paper trimmer which has a "wavy cut" effect so that it is 5mm-10mm short from the outside edges of the brown card.
Next make the fancy ribbon design by taking a cutting from each ribbon spool of around 12cm. Take your first piece of ribbon and make into a simple loop and use sticky tape to stick the cut ends of the loop onto the back of the card. Take the second piece of ribbon and loop this through the first ribbon and stick the cut ends of the loop to the opposite end of the card. Use prit stick or PVA glue to apply the parchment paper to the A4 brown card with equal spacing at the edges.
You should be in the possession of your own professional DIY wedding invitations!
